Summer Youth Program Choices

Choose three Summer Youth Programs from the drop down lists in which you are interested and rank them in order of preference.  For detailed descriptions of each exploration, check out the MTU SYP web page at http://youthprograms.mtu.edu.  Winners will receive a scholarship to attend a one-week program in the summer 2012.  Actual registration will be arranged after the winners are selected.  If winning students have previously registered, they will be reimbursed.

Note also that there are several more SYP Career Explorations offered than those listed above.  The AIChE scholarship recognizes students who are interested in Science and Engineering.  If you are interested in attending other programs at MTU that are not listed above, we encourage you to do so but will not be able to offer you a scholarship.

NOTE: The Women in Engineering and Engineering Scholars programs require additional applications because they are scholarships offered from MTU directly.  If you are interested in those programs you need to complete their required applications and submit them to MTU directly.  Your parents or teachers can help.

MTU’s SYP is a popular event and classes do tend to fill quickly, which is why the committee likes to choose winners and have them registered by mid-April.  If, however, you are concerned about not getting your first choice exploration, we recommend you register directly through MTU’s SYP website (http://youthprograms.mtu.edu).  If you are chosen as a winner of this scholarship, you will be reimbursed if you have already registered.  We will do what we can to help you get in your first choice session.  We ask for second and third choice programs in the event your first choice is not available.

Essay Requirement

Please answer the following questions.  The selection committee encourages each student to thoughtfully consider this section of the application.  Submissions are not limited to the space on this page.  Feel free to use as many words as necessary to describe yourself and how you expect to benefit from attending the Summer Youth Program.  We encourage you to be creative!

1.  What are your future academic or career plans?  How did you arrive at this plan?  Why did you choose the three programs listed on the application?

 2.  Describe your extra-curricular activities and why they are important to you.  (i.e. school, government, clubs, sports, hobbies, church, youth groups, volunteering, work, etc.)

3.  How did you find out about the Career Exploration Program Scholarship?

4.  Have you attended this or any similar programs?  If yes, please describe.

5.  Do you have a parent or family member who is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers?  Select One Yes No

Winners are invited to our Award Banquet to receive their award.  Generally your photograph is taken for our newsletter and Web site.   By checking this box, you authorize Mid-Michigan AIChE  to use your photograph in future Section newsletters and on the Web site.
