MTU Career Exploration Program AIChE Scholarship Information

The Mid-Michigan section of AIChE is pleased to offer an exciting scholarship opportunity to students in the Tri-Cities area.  The scholarship covers room, board, tuition, and a $100 travel allotment for a one-week session at the Michigan Technological University (MTU) Summer Youth Program.

Program Description:  The Summer Youth Program is a one-week program at the MTU campus, which gives students an opportunity to explore careers and develop skills.  The students will participate in laboratory, classroom and field experiences in a selected career area.   For details of the SYP, please visit their website at http://youthprograms.mtu.edu/.  This scholarship is specific to the Summer Youth Program and is limited to explorations in engineering and science. 

The scholarship can be applied to the following courses:

Bridges, Dams, and Skyscrapers: Building BIG Aviation and Aerospace
Chemical Engineering Forensic Science and CSI
Computer and Electrical Engineering Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology
Engineering the Human Body Green Technology: Sustain the Future
General Engineering Medical Laboratory Science
Geological Engineering Medical Physiology
Mechanical Engineering: Design the Future Sports Science
Michigan Tech Motor Sports Wide World of Chemistry
Mobile Robotics  
Rail and Intermodel Transportation  
Engineering Scholars Program (ESP)  
Women in Engineering (WIE)  
The World of Materials  

The special programs, ESP and WIE, are funded by MTU, but if you are our scholarship winner and are accepted to one of those programs, your MM AIChE scholarship will cover the registration fee and group transportation if using the MTU SYP Charter Bus.

Eligibility:  Tri-City area students currently in grades 9-11 and who have not received the Mid-Michigan AIChE Summer Youth Program Scholarship in the past are eligible to apply.  A maximum of three students per year will be awarded scholarships.

Application Requirements

1.    Application - Students must complete the Web-based application form. This includes providing some basic demographic information and answering two essay questions.

2.    Letters of Recommendation - At least one teacher recommendation is required. Up to two additional teacher, counselor, or other recommendations are encouraged. We have provided guidelines for your letters of recommendation that you can print and give to your references to assist them in preparing your recommendation.  Letters of recommendation must be sent via e-mail or fax to:

Application Deadline

Your Web-based application and letter(s) of recommendation must all be RECEIVED by Thursday, April 12th, 2012.  Judging will take place the following week.  Late applications will not be evaluated.

Selection Process

Entries will be judged by a team of local members of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers based on all the information submitted.  Selection criteria used will include: benefit to the student, area of interest, application quality, quality of recommendation letters, and essay answer thoughtfulness and completeness.

The award recipients are notified in late April and will be invited to attend an AIChE dinner meeting for presentation of awards.
