Applying Computational Intelligence

Arthur has been a participant in the field of Artificial Intelligence since the 1990’s. While the “expert in the box” idea of AI has many uses, it has not dominated the world as some expectedArthur has recognized that the developments in machine intelligence have given rise to useful tools, and an area best described as computational intelligence. He defines this as “a system of methods and infrastructure that enhance human intelligence by learning and discovering new patterns, relationships, and structures in complex dynamic environments for solving practical problems.”

In contrast to applied AI, which is visually represented by putting the expert in the computer, applied computational intelligence is visualized by an effective collaboration between the human and the computer, which leads to enhanced human intelligence:

A flood of ideas in this area has penetrated industry with tremendous speed and persistence. However, for most of the engineers and scientists introducing computational intelligence technologies into practice, looking at the growing number of new approaches, understanding their theoretical principles and potential for value creation, becomes a more and more difficult task. This talk is centered around Arthur’s soon-to-be-released book: Applying Computational Intelligence: How to Create Value (http://www.amazon.com/Applying-Computational-Intelligence-Create-Value/dp/3540699104/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1255033626&sr=8-1 ).

With his blend of humor and unique perspective, Arthur will describe the sources of value creation in computational intelligence, and explain clearly the different approaches and offer successful practical implementations.

Dr. Arthur Kordon received the M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University in Varna, Bulgaria and his Ph.D. degree from the Technical University in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 1996 he joined Dow Core R&D, and is now a Data Mining and Modeling Leader in the Data Mining and Modeling Capability of The Dow Chemical Company. He is an internationally recognized expert in applying emerging technologies in industry, and has given talks and chaired panels on the topic at the major computational intelligence conferences such as WCCI and GECCO. He has successfully introduced several novel technologies for improved manufacturing and new product design in the chemical industry, and his research interests include application issues of computational intelligence, robust empirical modeling, intelligent process monitoring and control, and data mining. He has published more than 60 papers and five book chapters in the area of applied computational intelligence and advanced control.

When: Wednesday, October 21

Where:    Grand Traverse Pie Company, Midland Room, 2600 N. Saginaw Rd., Midland, MI 48640,
                989-839-4872

Schedule:  5:30–6:00 p.m., Gather at restaurant
                  6:00–7:00 p.m., Dinner
7:00–8:00 p.m., Presentation by Arthur Kordon

Menu: There are three choices:
1. A limited number of people (~20) can just go through the regular serving line, and choose off the full menu (http://www.gtpie.com/menu/ ); however, if there are other customers or we overwhelm their staff they cannot guarantee how long it will take to serve orders and you might be late.
2. If you pre-order, we can combine orders and have your selection boxed up and ready when you get there. You can just reimburse us for the cost (cash or check). Choose from these sandwiches: chicken salad, ham & havarti, chicken pesto, egg salad, gourmet chicken salad, turkey with bacon, veggie, tuna salad, GT club, roast beef & bleu, or Italian; also choose either sandwich and pie for $8.99, or sandwich and cookie for $7.99.
3. You can eat somewhere else, just come for the talk, and maybe dessert.
Cost: In an effort to reduce costs to the membership, we are just passing along the prices charged by the restaurant. Of course, we appreciate donations to defray the speaker's costs, and will have a box open for donations (would $5.00 be too much?).

RSVP: To Rose Peterson (rose.peterson@dowcorning.com, 989-496-6469) by noon on Monday, October 19.

NOTE: Mid-Michigan AIChE will charge people who make reservations but then do not attend the meeting.
